This Week at MSS

woman in white jacket giving high-5 to students passing by

Dear Families,

Thank you to Tina Ryder, all those who volunteered and donated items, and all those who played Bingo on Saturday. It was a lot of fun and everyone had a good time! We have several upcoming events to finish out the year, including the Boys Night Out Bowling and Back to the 90s Dinner and Auction. Please read the HSA minutes on the website and see below to learn more about the end-of-year events.

Thank you to all of those who have sold the Carnival Raffle Tickets. The competition for top seller and top-selling class is close! Please reach out to hsa@mothersetonschool.org to request more tickets. If you do not plan to sell your tickets, please return them to the main office immediately.

On Thursday, March 28, we begin the Easter Triduum with Holy (Maundy) Thursday, followed by Good Friday and Holy Saturday, culminating in Easter Sunday. From the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops:

Though chronologically three days (Thursday evening-Sunday Evening), they are liturgically one day unfolding for us the unity of Christ's Paschal Mystery.

The single celebration of the Triduum marks the end of the Lenten season, and leads to the Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord at the Easter Vigil.

The liturgical services that take place during the Triduum are:

  • Mass of the Lord's Supper
  • Good Friday of the Lord's Passion
  • Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord

While every day is a day for prayer, the Triduum stands apart as three special days for prayer. It is a time to deeply reflect upon the profound mystery of our faith. I encourage you to use this sacred time to pray with your family. Creighton University's online ministries has a selection of daily prayers for the Holy Week you might find useful.

As a reminder, we will have a half-day on March 28; After School Care will not be available. Easter break will begin on Good Friday and continue through April 7.

Have a blessed week and a restful break!

Sincerely,

Kathleen J. Kilty, PhD
Principal

Easter Cookies Recipe (Make Saturday Night!)

Here's a special treat you can make with the kids to help bring the meaning of the Easter Story to life!

Easter Story Cookies (Make the Evening Before Easter)

You will need: 1 C Whole Pecans, 1 C Sugar, 1 tsp vinegar, 3 egg whites, pinch of salt, Mixing Bowl, Wooden Spoon, Ziplock baggie, Painter's Tape, and Bible

1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. (This is important! Don’t wait until you are half done with the recipe.)

2. Place pecans in the zipper baggie and let the children beat them with a wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested, He was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read John 19:1-3.

3. Let each child smell the vinegar. Put 1 teaspoon vinegar into a mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross, He was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30.

4. Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read John 10:10-11.

5. Sprinkle a little salt into each child’s hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus’ followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Read Luke 23:27.

6. So far, the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1 cup of sugar. Explain how the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him. Read Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16.

7. Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12-15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God’s eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3.

8. Fold in the broken nuts. Drop a teaspoon of mixture onto a wax paper covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus’ body was laid. Read Matthew 27:57-60.

9. Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven off. Give each child a piece of painter’s tape and seal the door. Explain that Jesus’ tomb was sealed. Read Matthew 27: 65-66.

10. GO TO BED! Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus’ followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20 and 22.

11. On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter, Jesus’ followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty! Read Matthew 28:1-9.
